  • Crookneck zucchini (Cucubita pepo) : An ancient variety from the United Kingdom, its name literally means "crooked neck" due to its distinctive shape. Highly productive and easy to grow, its hardiness and early ripening allow for earlier planting and transplanting than other zucchini because it tolerates low temperatures better. The plant has a bushy habit and is not overly vigorous; 80 cm spacing between plants and 80 cm spacing between rows is ideal. It should be eaten like any other zucchini, while still immature. To save the seeds, wait until it ripens, when it turns bright orange (as in the photos).
Being very early, it is suitable for short seasons, and its resistance to fungal diseases allows us to grow it even in rather humid climates. It has average water requirements.
The "classic" zucchini varieties of Northern Europe and some American countries, better suited to continental climates, are different from Mediterranean and Asian varieties. The former develop earlier and are smaller (they should be consumed at around 12-15 cm), and are more tolerant of low temperatures and fungal diseases. However, they are less productive than Mediterranean varieties. Furthermore, they are admittedly less flavorful, so we recommend these zucchini varieties for cooler, more humid climates.
