Caigua (Cyclanthera pedata)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Caigua (Cyclanthera pedata): An Andean plant cultivated since time immemorial, its cucumber-like fruit is consumed in a variety of ways, including in herbal medicine. It has a climbing habit, but can also be grown as a creeping plant. In this case, be careful to give it plenty of space: its strong tendrils tend to climb and choke out any plants in their path.
We recommend providing support for climbing plants.
The plant is very hardy, like a wild one, and requires no special cultivation care. A well-tilled and fertilized soil will certainly allow it to thrive, producing a significant number of fruits. Caigua is only susceptible to high temperatures; plant it in partial shade. Alternatively, you can plant it immediately after the last frost; it can tolerate temperatures below 10°C.
In the South, it can also be sown in summer and harvested in autumn, even late autumn.
Interesting fact: Caigua has been cultivated for a couple of centuries in the Lombardy pre-Alpine areas, likely arriving in the 18th century. There are traditional recipes using this fruit, which is also preserved in brine.
A plant for everyone, easy, productive, and with that exotic touch that arouses curiosity.
