Manpukuji Carrot (Daucus carota)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Mapukunji Carrot (Daucus carota): very long carrot from Japan. It descends from the ancient Japanese types of long carrot from the Edo period. This variety is sweet, especially if harvested after winter frost.
Traditionally served as 'Namasu' (grated carrot salad) for Japanese New Year celebrations.
The roots easily reach 60 cm of length if cultivated in the right soil, which must be well worked and not too fertile to prevent the carrot from growing "beards". For the seeds you will have to wait until the spring following sowing. Seedlings can be sown in tall containers where they can be isolated with non-woven fabric or very fine tulle during flowering. Carrots hybridize easily, growing them in containers will make it easier to reproduce the seeds alone.
