Borettana Onion (Allium cepa)
Borettana Onion (Allium cepa): Its historical roots date back to the 1400’s when the onion was grown in Boretto, and after long wandering around Italy, it finally returned to its place of origin from which it took its name.
This very ancient variety has overcome many adversities, (in the 1920’s a harsh season and some agricultural factors led to the cease of cultivation in the Reggio Emilia area) it is now well stablished in its birth place, though.
The Borettana has a typical flavour and is popular in cuisine for specific recipes as in preserves. It can be sown starting in spring to get an autumn harvest.
This variety prefers loose or clay soil, constant irrigation is also important but avoiding water stagnation.
