Astrakhanski watermelon (Citrullus lanatus): from Russia comes a watermelon that is easy to grow and jas an excellent shelf life
It is a less vigorous variety, therefore less subject to plant diseases and requiring fewer cultivation interventions, such as pruning.
It also adapts well to non-sandy soils, which are generally more difficult for cucurbits and especially for watermelons.
The fruits, round or slightly oval in shape, have a thick, dark, almost black skin with pine-green streaks. This characteristic ensures good shelf life after harvest.
The average weight is around 6 kilograms, or a little more.
Please note: there are commercial varieties called “Astrakhan Watermelons,” with lighter, larger fruits, but they have nothing to do with this ancient variety.Ideal for beginners, thanks to its hardiness and ease of cultivation.
