Desert Watermelon (Citrullus Ianatus)
Desert Watermelon (Citrullus Ianatus) : From the deserts of the United States, this watermelon is capable of withstanding very hot climates and long droughts like no other ecotype of the species. The fruit, weighing approximately 4-6 kg, has pale skin and yellow flesh and keeps well after harvest. The plant is not very productive, but its flavor is exceptional. It also requires little soil, always considering that a fertile soil improves its organoleptic characteristics. The roots are among the most developed of the species; good soil cultivation will help reduce water requirements. The green part, however, is not overly vigorous and almost completely lacks tendrils. Ripens in 85 days.
*= Very low, does not require irrigation
**= Low, also suitable for hot and arid areas, water only in case of prolonged drought
***= Reduced, one of the least demanding varieties of the species, suitable for areas with sporadic rainfall, irrigate only in case of prolonged drought
****= Tolerant to water stress, requires moderate irrigation, suitable for low-water consumption gardens.
Unfortunately, until the guide is published, this is just a rough guideline to avoid confusion. Dryland farming requires cultivation techniques suited to the soil and soil conditions. All varieties have been acclimated in Italy.
