Kurobe watermelon (Citrullus lanatus): a highly prized variety in Japan and very expensive, the specimens are individually packaged in special baskets and can reach nearly one hundred euros each!
Imported from the USA in the second half of the 19th century (a selection of the famous Rattlesnake), it then established itself with great success as a commercial variety in the 1930s, along the Kurobe River in the Nyuzen area, hence its name. It is traditionally given as a gift for good luck and is a staple at traditional summer festivals. The fruits are large, weighing from 10 to 20 kg, and the flesh is firm and sweet but not overly so, in contrast to other Japanese varieties that have a moderately high Brix (sugar) level.
The plant is vigorous, requiring pruning to increase its size and organoleptic qualities. It's a late variety; in the north, we recommend early planting in a tunnel. Suitable for experienced growers.
