Moon and Stars Cherokee Watermelon (C. lanatus)
Moon and Stars Cherokee Watermelon (C. lanatus): there are several varieties of Moon and Stars watermelons, this one was selected by the Cherokee natives, and then first included in the catalogue in 1924, now ir is also cultivated by the Amish. The size is important, the fruit reaches 60 cm and can weight up to 8kg, the skin is dark and with the typical spots reminiscent of stars and, often it also displays a larger spot that in fact, recalls the Moon, hence the name of the type. The pink pulp is not excessively sweet, with a reduced presentation of seeds. This variety requires constant irrigation for the correct development of the fruits, fortunately these do not tend to split, which allows for over irrigation errors when the fruit is close to maturity (watermelons normally "break" if over-irrigated when the fruit is ripe and the peel has hardened). Variety included in the Slow Food Ark of Taste.
