Yamato Silver Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.)
Yamato Silver Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.): from Nara Prefecture, another jewel of Japanese selections. This country's ancient varieties reflect its culture: fruits and berries selected over centuries with respect for tradition and meticulous attention, beautiful appearance, and exceptional organoleptic qualities. This variety is certainly the archetype: 12° Brix, slightly less sweet than its "brother," the Suika Bianco, though the flesh is crispier, partly because of its smaller size—the fruits weigh a maximum of 3.5 kg. The flavor is complex, and the reduced sweetness (compared to the Suika) allows us to perceive more aromas, less honey in favor of citrus and even pineapple.
Don't expect the taste of common red-fleshed watermelons; the white ones are very different from the yellow-fleshed ones.
This marvel has two small disadvantages: it's low-yielding (to the advantage of quality) due to its small size; and its skin is extremely thin and breaks easily, both when irrigated when ripe and during transport.
Recommended for experienced growers with a gastronomic interest and collectors.
Ready in 75 days from transplant.
