  • Armenian Striped Cucumber (C. melo var Flexousus): there are two varieties of Armenian Cucumber: the common one and the striped one, this one.
The main differences are vigour, precocity and rusticity.
Vigour: The striped variety has a much smaller aerial part, which affects production but makes the plant more hardy and more resistant to plant diseases such as fungal diseases. A tougher skin also helps the striped variety resist pests. On the other hand, it has a longer (less precocious) maturation time.
The flavor is very similar, slightly more herbaceous and fresh in the striped one, with a medium crunchy flesh.
This variety is rarer than the common one precisely because of the matter of productivity, but it is certainly easier to grow and requires less intervention.

The flexousus melons that came to us from Asia, like the Xylangouro, which stopped in Greece to end up in our Tortarello Abruzzese .
To be eaten when still unripe like cucumbers, they have a decidedly sweeter flavor and a less watery pulp. In particular
This variety is among the oldest known of the typology, not for nothing does it come from what is considered the cradle of the species.
The advantage over smaller varieties is the speed of growth, on the other hand it tends to become too large and tough at the same speed, but don't worry, the plant is very productive, you will have harvested a lot before it reaches. maturity.
Staggered sowing is recommended to ensure fresh cucumbers.
Particularly suitable for those who find it difficult to grow cucumbers: the plant is rustic and resistant to fungal infestations, it can be grown without any particular care.
