Giant Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)
Macedonian Giant Sunflower (Helianthus annuus): Native to North America, sunflowers were brought to Russia in the 17th century by Tsar Peter the Great, creating an important center of diversification that spread to neighboring Eastern European states as far away as Mongolia. This variety originates from Moldova, and we have been growing it successfully for years. Extremely large, the flower reaches 35-40 cm in diameter, and the plant has a stem exceeding 7 cm in diameter and 3.50-4 m tall. Although it is actually a hardy and undemanding variety, adequate preventive fertilization and proper irrigation will yield extraordinary specimens. The seeds are edible, and production is clearly massive. It also has great honey-producing properties. It is a beautiful plant, easy to grow, and particularly scenic.
