Gambian Habanero (Capsicum chinense)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Gambian Habanero (Capsicum chinense): A truly unique pepper from Africa, conventionally classified as a habanero, it is, however, an ecotype that exhibits substantial differences. It is highly spicy, but its flavor is less fruity, more earthy, almost smoky, and very pleasant, somewhat reminiscent of "local" peppers. The plant grows to a meter tall (in open ground), is highly productive and, above all, hardy. Less demanding than common habaneros, it produces even in intense cold and tolerates full sun. The berries are elongated, three-lobed, yellow to red in color, and fleshy.
It lends itself well to drying.
Due to its particular rusticity and above all its low water requirement, it is part of the research in aridocoltura carried out by the agronomist Francesco Marotti ( www.aridocoltura.com )
