  • Kiwano (Cucumis metulliferus): Also known as horned melon, this cucurbitaceae has long been cultivated in Italy and is increasingly well known. Well acclimated to our latitudes, it is easy to grow and produces abundant fruit. These are ovoid in shape and covered with sharp thorns. The gelatinous pulp contains numerous seeds and has an exotic, sweet and sour flavor, but is very pleasant (note: full sun, rich soil, and harvest at the right ripeness!). It can be eaten as a dessert simply by opening it, or it can be used in smoothies or in incredible salads. The plant is a macrothermal plant and does not tolerate cold climates or those with wide temperature ranges well. During germination, it requires a constant temperature above 15°C. On the other hand, it tolerates water stress well, is not particularly demanding, and is resistant to fungal diseases, but not immune. It is a climbing plant, requiring support. It also does well in pots. Its beautiful orange fruits and distinctive shape are particularly decorative on balconies.
These can be detached and enjoyed immediately with a refreshing break.
