Aswad eggplant (Solanum melongena): an ancient variety originating from Iraq, it's among the largest known. Fruits easily weigh 1.5 kg, yet retain their flavor. The sweet, firm flesh is well-suited to elaborate cooking methods, such as parmigiana and various baked dishes. Hardy, very hardy, early-ripening, and productive, it's easy to grow, but requires high temperatures both during germination and cultivation; it's not suited to forced cultivation in a greenhouse.
