Cambodian Giant Green Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Cambodian Giant Green Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) : a Cambodian eggplant of extraordinary flavor and beauty. The fruit is large, rounded, and slightly ribbed, weighing from 450 grams to 1 kilo. The skin is a beautiful green that fades to white. The flesh is very white and seedless, flavorful, sweet, and fragrant, without the bitterness typical of many eggplant varieties. Its texture is also suitable for quick cooking. Try it stuffed or fried—it's fabulous. The plant is quite large for this species, reaching 1.20 meters in height, with prominent leaves. Grown in a pot (as large as possible), it is exceptionally ornamental, thanks to its enormous, bright, embroidered fruits that stand out against the dark leaves. Ninety days from transplanting to ripening, the large flowers (the largest of the species) will be followed by the enormous fruits: green with well-defined white spots for eating, yellowish-yellow ready for seeding.
Like most Asian green eggplants, it is strongly macrothermic, requiring full sun and a constant germination temperature of 25°C. It is not an ecotype suitable for forcing or early sowing.
