Bailan White Melon (Cucumis melo L.)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Bailan White Melon (Cucumis melo L.): an interesting variety grown near Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province in the People's Republic of China. Imported in 1940 by U.S. Vice President Henry A. Wallace, it has adapted well to the area's challenging climate: low average temperatures and abundant summer rainfall.
This makes it a variety suitable for humid areas and early planting, thanks to its tolerance to colder temperatures compared to other ecotypes of the species. An early variety, it will yield fruits weighing approximately 1-1.5 kg, with white skin that turns yellow when ripe. The fragrant flesh is a lovely white/green color, with a firm but not rubbery consistency and very sweet. It stores well after harvest.
Not particularly vigorous, it limits cultivation care to a few interventions, easy to grow even for beginners.
