Bidwell Casaba Melon (C. melo)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Bidwell Casaba melon (C. melo): Casaba melons were cultivated for centuries along the Mediterranean coast, then made their way to the Americas in the mid- to late-19th century. On our continent, they were called winter melons, while in the Americas, these long-life melons were called Casaba.
The Bidwell house is named after General John Bidwell, (later a senator), who received the seeds from the USDA in 1869.
Not much has changed since then: the large fruits reach and exceed 6 kilograms, the orange pulp is sweet and creamy, with a light, non-invasive aroma, and a very pleasant citrus hint reminiscent of orange.
It keeps for a long time after being picked and, in a cool place, can easily last until Christmas.
After nearly two centuries, this marvel is making its way back home, and will soon become your favorite melon.
