Melone Pell de Melicotó (Cucumis melo)
FINE STAGIONE
Peach Skin Melon (Cucumis melo): a rarity from the Balearic Islands, a melon with "peach skin." Also known as Pelut, it is a traditional variety from the island of Mallorca. The fruit weighs 3 kg, is gray/green in color with a sort of fuzz on the skin, while the flesh is white and particularly soft (floja). The flavor is sweet and aromatic, but the texture of the flesh is its peculiarity and weakness: once picked, it only keeps for a few days.
In the field the plant is not very vigorous, it does not need to be pruned, rather rustic it is well suited to "dry" cultivation, that is with very little irrigation (as in dryland farming ).
This is a variety for enthusiasts; grow it purely for academic interest; it's not worth it for home-growing or cooking.
We chose this variety (together with agronomist Dr. Marotti) for two reasons: first, it is traditionally grown in drylands and therefore suitable for dryfarming; second, since 2024, thanks to contact with several associations, we have been focusing on Spain's agrobiodiversity. While many countries, such as France, Germany, Romania, and Poland (it sounds like the beginning of a list from the Second World War), are committed to preserving heirloom varieties, in Spain this is a highly localized and poorly organized phenomenon, so we decided to lend a hand.
