Colombian Giant Pepino Dulce (Solanum murigatum)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Colombian Giant Sweet Pepino (Solanum muricatum): This variety of Sweet Pepino, known in Italy as melon-pear (due to its flavor), is grown in Colombia in the Nariño and Putumayo regions. Compared to its better-known "brother," this cultivar is significantly larger, about twice the size, takes a little longer to mature, and is less tolerant of low temperatures. It can easily be grown as an annual in open fields in Italy, but if kept in a pot and protected from frost, it can be grown as a perennial. It has a bushy habit but over the years it develops into a small tree. In southern Italy, it can be left in the ground year-round.
The plant enjoys full sun but requires constant watering. It will reward you with abundant production: the numerous, elongated fruits will ripen from green to pink-purple. When they begin to smell, it's time to harvest them. Their orange flesh is firm but tender, fragrant, with very few seeds and a delightful flavor.
Pepino should be propagated in the years following planting, possibly by cutting. Simply cut a few branches and place them in water. They will develop roots and be ready to plant in the ground in a matter of days.
