Details
Reisetomate tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum): an interesting and ancient cultivar of Teutonic origin but with Mesoamerican origins. Translated from the German as "traveler's tomato," it was likely used during travels because it was easy to separate parts without damaging the entire berry, thanks to the phenomenon of fasciation . This usually occurs due to plant diseases, considered a defect in the berry, but in the Reisetomate , it is genetic: it causes the tomato to develop as an irregular collection of small, tangled tomatoes, giving it a grotesque appearance.
The flavor is sour and acidic, yet pleasant, with a slightly sweet aroma. As mentioned, it keeps well after picking, even if eaten in small quantities.
The plant is indeterminate, and the berries ripen within 75 days of transplanting. This variety is recommended for its botanical interest, but less so for its consumption.
