  • Bloody Butcher Tomato (L. lycopersicum): Although this heirloom tomato has an "ordinary" appearance, it actually hides excellent characteristics that make it perfect for home-grown tomatoes and small-scale retail trade. The plant is a "potato leaf" tomato, meaning its leaves are not jagged, like potatoes. This term often causes confusion, as people tend to think that the "potato leaf" tomato is a variety, but in reality, it's a common characteristic among many cultivars, even among the most heirloom tomatoes, such as wild tomatoes. Returning to our tomato, the plant is highly productive, and of the coppery variety, meaning it produces large bunches. The berries, rounded and smooth, weigh between 60 and 100 grams, have an intense flavor, and are moderately watery. This variety, one of the earliest, tolerates low temperatures very well, allowing us to advance or delay planting to take advantage of the increasingly rare rainfall at the beginning and end of the season, thus saving on irrigation. Harvested directly from the vine, tomatoes store well, making them suitable for small-scale retail trade. They are highly versatile in the kitchen, from sauces (including preserves) to raw consumption, even as a filling: their firm, seedless, and moderately watery flesh makes them suitable for any recipe. They have an indeterminate ripening period, and are ready in 54 days from transplanting.
