  • Seccagno Tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicon): a very important and ancient cultivar " u Siccagnu " is a typical tomato from Southern Italy, whose main peculiarity is that it is grown without irrigation .   This ensures extremely high sustainability, both due to the savings in irrigation water and the high resistance to common tomato diseases, as well as the limited presence of unwanted wild plants due to the dry soil. The oblong fruit is small (about 20 grams), and yield is low, but its organoleptic characteristics are not affected. Indeed, it is tasty and suitable for numerous culinary uses. The fruit's low water content and thick skin make it excellent for winter storage. In Sicily, it is used for both dried tomatoes and sauces.

The Siccagno tomato is one of those varieties at risk of extinction that we distribute free of charge in its native and neighboring municipalities. All Sicilian growers can request it by leaving a message when ordering or by calling, and pick it up completely free of charge at our headquarters.

  • Before World War II, Seccagno, or siccagno, or dry-harvested tomato, cultivars were widespread. Not only in Sicily and Calabria, but throughout southern Italy as far as Lazio, with a variety called "dry-harvested tomato," grown without irrigation and hung in braids for the winter. All Seccagno varieties are "storable," meaning they can be stored for winter. Commercially, Siccagno is currently grown only in Sicily, particularly in the areas of Valledolmo, Sclafani Bagni, Alia Vallelunga, and Villalba. Here are some links for more information:
