  • Giant Sicilian Radish (Raphanus sativus): this traditional radish comes straight from Sicily. It can reach up  to 6cm of diameter, it is rustic and has a short cultivation cycle.

It can be planted up to October. The harvest for summer consumption can be done around 1 month after the sow. Whereas in autumn, with lower temperatures, it should be done after two months. If the root stays on the ground for too long it hardens, and gets spicier. Its main advantage lies in its tender pulp and large size, which slow down the hardening.

For seed production (this is not an F1 vareity, so it is reproducible), it will be necessary to wait for the spring after the first sow. You can cultivate some plants in a large pot with sowing soil, to be able to shelter it during winter and collect the seeds once it has passed. Sowing from March to October

  • Radishes and carrots don’t need seedbeds, that is, they can be sown directly on the ground, they have very different crop cycles, but mostly all germination times range from a few days for radishes to 20 and even more for carrots, especially if the temperatures drop (see free guides on the site "from sowing to transplanting").
We can use this feature to our advantage, sowing carrots and radishes on the same row at the same time, these will act as a "row signal" allowing us to weed and not to lose carrot seedlings before their emergence.
After a month the carrots will be emerged and the radish will be ready for collection.
