  • Solanum mammosum:
An ornamental shrub that grows to over a meter tall, with delightful purple star-shaped flowers and curious, sunny yellow fruit clusters. They resemble cow's udders or, perhaps, a fox's snout. The juice was extracted and used as a laundry detergent. Native to South America, it is extremely hardy and widespread in many countries around the world, practically having a different name for each. It often has apotropaic properties; in Taiwan, it is a symbol of good luck, while in mainland China, during New Year's Eve, it is customary to create potted arrangements: the more protuberances it has, the more generations of the family will live in harmony and serenity. Caution: all components of the fruit are toxic.
