Monstruous Spinach from Virofly (Spinacia oleracea)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Monstrous Spinach Virofly (Spinacia oleracea): this variety comes from France, it appeared in the 16th - 17th centuries, it is particularly vigorous and resistant to cold weather, adapted to the Parisian suburbs and to the regions of the Île-de-France. The big and fleshy leaves can reach considerable dimensions. This variety is early and can be sown for a spring harvest. It is disappearing because there isnt much demand for it, commercially, however, it is really good for home cooking since it's super healthy.
France is the first in producer of this variety but as they can only be sold “fresh” and cannot be harvested mechanically because of the specific characteristics of their stems, it has been gradually substituted by other easier varieties.
Currently, there are very few farmers still interested in cultivating it, which means it might disappear soon.
