  • Vuelta Abajo tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.): from one of the areas where the best tobacco for the production of Puros is grown, in splendid Cuba, a prized variety for the production of Tripa, the "filling" directly from the legendary Hoyo de Monterrey hacienda.
Part of the Cohiba cigar production also comes from the same area. The seeds are very small; it's best to use a broadcast seedbed, carefully mixing them 50/50 with very finely sifted soil. The seeds should not be buried, but rather "placed" into the substrate and lightly pressed. Help yourself with our free sowing guides: GUIDE FROM SOWING TO TRANSPLANTATION.
Growing tobacco doesn't require any particular experience; well-worked soil with a good nitrogen content will help produce beautiful plants. To produce seeds, you'll need to wait until the panicle inflorescence, composed of pink flowers (while ceremonial varieties have green or yellow flowers), is followed by the capsules. When ripe, they will turn a light brown color and, when crushed, will tend to open; it's time to collect the seeds.
For the production of smoking tobacco, however, the leaves are fermented through a rather elaborate process.
