Tomatillo Queen of Malinalco (Physalis ixocarpa)
LANCIO SACCHETTI DI NATALE
Tomatillo Queen of Malinalco (Phylasis ixocarpa): an ancient and extremely rare variety from the town of Malinalco, in southwestern Mexico. Like other tomatillos, the plant has a bushy growth habit, is hardy, and loves the heat. The abundant, lemon-yellow fruits grow up to 10 cm long, have a strong, hazelnut-like aroma, and are covered in a papery "shell" like other tomatillos and the phyllo tree. They are sweet and not at all acidic, and can be eaten cooked like tomatoes or puréed into a delicious, fruity sauce. Sow in March, transplant in April at stable temperatures. They are large and ready in just over two months from transplanting. This variety is particularly sweet, with an exceptional citrus aftertaste; it can be eaten raw, in bites. An exotic, extraordinary flavor.
