  • Uchuva (Physalis peruviana): This small Latin American berry is particularly cultivated in Colombia, where it is highly prized both raw and for juice, and even for desserts. The small berry is sweet, with a very pleasant, faint hint of pineapple. Like other Physalis, the berry is enclosed in a "shell" that opens when ripe, making the plant ornamental. Growing is easy; it prefers full sun and loves the heat, but thanks to its early maturity, it can be grown successfully even in shorter growing seasons. It is particularly suited to pots, thanks to its hardiness, which allows it to tolerate some extra stress. Sow from March in a heated seedbed until June in the South. Grow it to bring an extraordinary dessert to the table.
Not to be confused with the Alchenchengi (Physalis alkekengi) which has larger berries with a different flavor.
Other Italian names: Peruvian Alchechengio, Yellow Alchechengio, Ribes del Cape. Abroad: Golden Berries, Aguaymanto, Uchuva, Ushun, Cereza del Perú, Aztec Berry, Inca Berry.
