Hubbard Blue Squash (Cucurbita maxima)
Since 1854, this large squash with its characteristic blue skin has been cultivated. Originally from South America, it was initially green; careful selection carried out in the mid-19th century produced its beautiful blue colour and increased the size of the fruits.
The deep orange flesh has all the typical qualities of Cucurbita maxima: velvety, compact, sweet and completely free of fibres.
The thick skin allows the fruits to keep for a long time after harvest. Considering their impressive size — around 15 kg or more per fruit — they can provide an excellent supply of squash throughout the winter.
In the field, the plants are vigorous. We recommend topping them after fruit set and allowing no more than two fruits per plant, in order to encourage good fruit development.
An excellent variety both for home seed-saving and self-sufficiency, and for small-scale commercial growing. We have been growing this squash for many years, and it continues to give us great satisfaction.
