Yoeme Kama Squash (Cucurbita argyrosperma): a rare squash species native to the Yaqui natives, who compete with the Hopi for the title of most important cultivators among the indigenous Amerindian people. The argynosperma species, sometimes called mixta, originates from southern Mexico and is cultivated primarily for its seeds, which are consumed both toasted and in herbal preparations, thanks to their laxative and vermifuge properties, a practice still in use throughout Latin America. The pulp is edible, neutral in flavor, and not at all sweet. The shoots and flowers are also eaten, like other squash species of the Cucurbita genus. Ripening takes a long time, about 120 days from transplanting. However, the plant is less demanding than normal squash in terms of soil and, above all, water requirements; it can be grown dry. A rarity from the people of Don Juan Matus.
