Tuscan Red Onion (Allium cepa L.)
Tuscan Red Onion (Allium cepa L.): This beautiful cultivar was sent to us by Mr. Daniele Albanese, who had kept it in his gardens for many years, along with the Bombolino Toscano Winter Tomato . Three years ago, it was distributed free of charge throughout Tuscany. It resembles an old Florentine red onion variety, large in size, with an intense flavor and a short shelf life. It is a short-day onion; the bulb develops with limited light hours and is best consumed in spring, after winter.
Compared to today's Tuscan onions (remember that Daniele has been preserving it for over half a century), this variety produces very large bulbs, with a strong, slightly sweet taste.
