  • Zambian Kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus var. zambianus): This exotic sweet-and-sour cucurbit hails from East Africa. The fruit's gelatinous pulp is completely edible and can be eaten raw or used in desserts and beverages. The skin is covered with soft, false spines, ranging from a streaked green color to yellow when ripe. Like the better-known Kiwano, it is a well-acclimated variety in Italy and is easy to grow.
The plant has a climbing habit, is very robust and easy to grow, even in pots. It prefers full sun.
Bringing a new, exotic flavor to the table and plenty of magnesium and vitamin A. Compared to the common Kiwano , the fruit is smaller, the thorns don't prick, and it can even be eaten green like a cucumber.
Extremely rustic and productive, it does not meet Italian taste, and is cultivated more for botanical interest.
