  • Northern Lights Tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum): This extraordinary variety is among the earliest, ready in about 50 days from transplanting! Early tomatoes, suited to the short season and colder climates, are typically copper-colored, like the Siberian variety . They are small or medium-sized; the Northern Lights tomato can weigh up to 400 grams. It is a beefsteak variety, with full flesh that is not too watery and a fruity flavor. Its color is also inviting: yellow-orange with red streaks. The plant is indeterminate, requires support, and produces a significant yield. In central and southern Italy, it can be sown late and harvested until late autumn.
Also suitable for dryland farming, see next section.

  • What do tomatoes bred to tolerate low temperatures have to do with an agricultural technique developed to counteract the effects of climate change and save water?
The answer lies in its precocity: we came across the Northern Lights tomato while searching for ecotypes that are more tolerant to "forcing" and temperature drops, and above all, ripen quickly, allowing them to "catch" the early spring rains, a period in which precipitation is more regular.
