Sicilian Snake Pumpkin (Lagenaria longissima)
Snake Squash (Lagenaria longissima) : This squash, grown primarily in Sicily, has a climbing habit and is used to cover pergolas. Undemanding and very productive, it can be eaten unripe until it reaches about 40 centimeters, like a zucchini. If left to grow, it can reach a meter in length. If left to creep, it will produce various shapes.
It is an edible lagenaria , few of its kind are. Used mostly for practical or ornamental purposes, such as for artifacts ( Hopi Rattle Gourd ) or for containers of liquids ( Pilgrim Bottle Gourd ), sometimes ritualistic ( Ceremonial Peyote Gourd ), or even to prevent damage to wildlife ( Giant Mayo Gourd ).
