Traditional varieties, some very ancient, like the Faenza watermelon, whose roots are lost in the centuries, perhaps imported as far back as the early 17th century. It most likely appears in Caravaggio's "Still Life with Fruit" from 1605. But it's not a rarity worth saving, from the aforementioned painting, also recently rediscovered, a true gem of Emilia: the Moscatello melon. Large in size, with an intense aroma, this marvel was cultivated for centuries and disappeared because it was unsuitable for transport; the fruit has a short shelf life once picked. We continue with a champion of flavor: the Neapolitan friggitello, the puparuol 'ro ciumm, ready to sauté alongside the large and delicious Florentine violet eggplant.
